Music and America's National Pastime

With Interleague games beginning this weekend, we pulled the following piece from our Musicology Archives, sure to be a grand slam!

To declare that music and baseball have carved different paths into the American fabric would be correct. However, they have crossed paths many times and the results have joined ballplayers and teams with timely American music trends to create a varied assembly of entertaining songs. Some of the most memorable tunes have been about specific ballplayers by well-known artists such as Teresa Brewer with “I Love Mickey”, Count Basie doing “Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?”, and Les Brown with “Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio”. There is an 1893 song about early baseball great, “King” Kelly which was made into a movie in 1927, “Slide, Kelly, Slide”. Many compositions have been about particular teams and their successes (the New York Yankees), their failures (the Chicago Cubs) and moving away (the Brooklyn Dodgers). The contemporary hit, “Centerfield”, by John Fogerty can be heard every day at ballparks coast to coast. “God Bless America” is still a staple at Yankees games, “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond is a favorite at Fenway Park in Boston and some ballparks will play regional music flavors like “The Cotton-Eyed Joe” which is heard during the seventh inning stretch at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington (Texas).

Of course the Babe Ruth of all baseball songs is “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”. Composed in 1908 by Jack Norwith and Albert Von Tilzer (neither of whom had ever attended a baseball game at the time), the Tin Pan Alley tune has become a seventh inning fixture at baseball games everywhere. One of the best-known rituals for this song started at the old Comiskey Park in Chicago in the early 1970s where the late Harry Caray would enthusiastically lead the crowd in singing the classic. Carey took the tradition with him in 1982 to Wrigley Field with the Cubs where the tradition achieved legendary status partly due to nationwide broadcasting of Cubs games. After Caray’s death the Cubs have continued the tradition with celebrity guest conductors for each game.

At some ballparks, starting pitchers can request their favorite music to be played as they warm up each inning. A number of hitters have requested different songs to be playing as they approach each of their turns at bat. A bad call for the home team made by the umpires can sometimes result in “Three Blind Mice” being played. There are countless other songs that get played in major and minor league parks across the globe each summer. So the next time you are at a ballpark enjoying the great game, notice how many different songs you hear and why you think they were selected.

#1 - Here is one for all you computer music composers out there. This is a very cool video on how Alex, a German video game sound designer uses virtual instruments from the East/West library mixed with certain articulation to get a great powerful epic sound when working on music for video games.

FirstCom Music Scores Custom Logo for Vivendi Entertainment!

FirstCom Music, a leading provider of music services, is pleased to announce the completion of the custom music logo for Vivendi Entertainment, a sister division of their parent company. FirstCom Music was selected for this high-profile project based on their vast music resources and their extensive orchestral catalog. The project requirements included an orchestral cinematic sound that compliment the sophisticated and clean feel of the new Vivendi V logo animation.

FirstCom scored the music to picture using early versions of the new animation supplied by Vivendi. Ken Nelson was the producer and executive producer of the sound track for the new logo: "Vivendi Entertainment had a very clear idea of the image and sound they wanted. Unlike many traditional libraries, we had the expertise to take the actual animation roughs and score directly to those assets. This allowed us to try several different approaches and orchestral mixes until we were able to capture just the right mood."

Nelson worked closely with Mark Kristol, Vivendi Entertainments Executive Vice President of Theatrical Marketing & Distribution, through several weeks of the post production process. "It was an absolute pleasure working with Ken and his team. Ken was keenly adept at interpreting the sound concept we had in mind. He was able to offer us several variations on that theme which enabled us to succinctly determine the score that would most effectively contribute to establishing our new identity. "

The score to "Rocky" sometimes is easily overlooked due to the mainstream success of "Gonna Fly Now", but throughout the score of the movie, there are truly breathtaking musical passages with beautiful strings and more.
This specific track has some great amazing orchestration, and of course amazing musicians on this recording!

Happy Friday folks, we thought for Friday we'd continue with some amazing musician videos, so here goes. It's amazing that some of the most mind-boggling talented music/musicians are ones you'll never hear or see until you go searching Youtube.

The first one is of a guy playing 3, count em' 3 guitars at once! The best part is, listen to his time and feel for the music! What talent!

The next one is of a young Liberace in the 40's. Although nowadays Liberace might have been known to most people now for his larger than life performances of the 70's, but you'll see in this video just what incredible talent he really had!

Lastly, here is a recording of Sergei Nakariokov, an amazing Russion trumpet player. This piece, called "Moto Perpetuo", was originally written for violin but was adapted for trumpet! Due to its requierement of 4 1/2 minutes of circular breathing and double-tonguing, it slowly became one of the most difficult musical pieces ever played on trumpet! Here's the kicker, he was only 17 years old when he recorded this.

Fun music fact of the week:
The famous long guitar intro to Led Zepplin's "Stairway To Heaven" is taken from the track "Taurus", which was composed and played by guitarist, the late Randy California when he was only 16 in 1967. The instrumental was dedicated to his Taurian girlfriend and recorded a year later by his band "Spirit". Led Zepplin heard it while on tour with Spirit in USA. (Randy Wolfe, was named "California" by his great friend of Jimi Hendrix, who tried to bring him to the UK, but Randy was too young at the time)

We recently rolled out our newest release of updates 2 weeks ago and hopefully this post can take a deeper look into what each one of these has to offer and why it's much more that just music!

- In today's world, people can tell the difference between just "music" and "Real Music", because the fact is, "real" music touches the soul! It invokes emotions, affects our personality, mood, and can alter our entire outlook for an entire day! Pretty powerful stuff when you stop and think about it!

-While average listener may not be able to decipher what instruments, or pitches are used but no doubt can still be inflicted with the same feelings as that of a professional audio engineer!
